The Breast Fed Babies in Town!

26-Oct-2012

Having celebrated recently the success of South London Healthcare’s donor Breastmilk Bank when the 1000th batch was processed, coordinator Karen Lewis was overjoyed to receive a visit from milkbank user, Ana, and her triplets.

Lucas, Isabella and Maria were born by caesarean section at Kings College Hospital 16 August 2012 at 32 weeks and one week later transferred to the Special Care Baby Unit at the Princess Royal Hospital for four more weeks.

Ana was always determined that her tiny babies would receive breastmilk only, and especially during their earliest weeks, even when she was unable to provide it all herself.   So Karen ensured there was plenty of breastmilk ‘on tap’ from the milkbank, and the triplets made marvellous progress.

Ana says “I needed all the support I could get and I’m very grateful to Karen and to all the women who so generously donate their milk to the bank.  And of course, there is no way I could do it all without my mum!”

Karen Lewis says “It was an absolute joy to see Ana with her mum, Malu, and her beautiful babies.   I would also like to thank all the mums who donate their breastmilk helping tiny babies like Ana’s, especially bearing in mind that many of our donors have had a baby on the Special Care Baby Unit and some may have had a sad outcome.”
