Rubbish Prizes! for our eco-friendly wards

22-Dec-2011

Like all environmentally-conscious organisations, South London Healthcare NHS Trust recognises the importance of efficient waste management and recycling. Having launched a new, greener scheme in January 2011, the Estates and Facilities Dept at the Trust were so impressed by the response from staff they have awarded prizes to the best performing departments.

Surgical ward 2 at the Princess Royal Bromley received 1st Prize of £75 in vouchers for their outstanding performance, and their waste collection team ISS received £25 for their role in supporting them. 2nd prize went to theatres at Queen Mary's in Sidcup and 3rd to delivery suite at Queen Elizabeth Woolwich.

Clive Aylett, Audit and Waste Manager, says "Working with any new procedure can take a while to get used to, but the staff here have managed extremely well. We're very impressed with the results. So far, we have probably saved around £18,000 by observing a greener waste disposal process, not to mention how environmentally friendly we've become!"

"Having recycled 83 tonnes of waste so far this year, it's not surprising the Trust is able to make a considerable contribution to recycling in the Boroughs of Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich."

"The prizes, donated by waste contractors Veolia, SRCL, Daniels Healthcare, & PHS Datashred, were awarded by Chief Executive Dr Chris Streather saying "We are very proud of the achievements made in improving waste disposal at the Trust. Thanks to the contractors who donated the prizes showing appreciation to staff for their efforts. Congratulations to all the winners."
